AutoXray

Quite often I'm asked 'What is a good scan tool?' and 'Is it worth me buying one?' Well, there are a lot of good scan tools on the market. Most are designed for the professional mechanic and cost thousands of dollars. There has never been a good scan tool that is affordable to the average DIY.

I think AutoXray has solved that problem. They have an affordable scan tool which will scan 1996 and newer Domestic, Asian and European OBD-II compliant vehicles, 1982-1995 GM 12 pin ALDL vehicles, 1983-1995 Ford EEC-IV vehicles, 1983-1995 Chrysler SCI vehicles, 1991-1995 Jeep vehicles.

The ProPack includes the EZ-Link scanner, OBD-II cable and OBD-II manufacturer specific cables, OBD-I GM, Ford, and Chrysler Cables, a user manual, and a hard carrying case.

We used this scanner in the shop for quite a while on every make and model of car from 1983 to 2003 and we were very pleased with it's performance and ease of use. What I like is that it is compact and fits in my hand rather nicely.

The way I judged ease of use is by using it without reading the users manual. I picked it up, plugged it in and started using it. The first thing you do is select the year make and model of vehicle and you're ready to go. Ten minutes after I plugged it into the car, I was reading codes. I'm not saying that you don't need to use the manual. On the contrary, the manual has a wealth of information on specific makes of cars.

Some of the really nice features are that you can get the software updates right over the internet. You don't have to buy cartridges every year when the new models come out. The codes are explained right on the screen in plain english (there is a Spanish version as well). You don't have to look them up in a book to see what they are.

It monitors sensors in real time so you can see what they are doing. Other features like the Capture Mode, Freeze Frame and Oxygen Sensor Monitoring are some more of the many features this scanner offers.

In my opinion this makes it a very nice scan tool. But there's more. The ProPack comes with a program called PC-Link. You install this software on your PC and you can take the information from the scan tool and dump it into your computer where PC Link will display the data for analysis, storage and hard copy printout. The scan tool connects to the PC through the serial port so you don't need any special cards. I would really like to see this done through the USB port to simplify the process.

After we used this for a while, we found ourselves reaching for this scanner over our Snap-On scanner. It was just really nice, convenient and easy to use.

AutoXray has a Support section on their web site that offers help when you need it. There is a database for selecting the proper connector for the vehicle you're working on. There is a Tech Support form and a phone number if you want to talk to a technician.

The AutoXray ProPack with the PC-Link software Lists for $499.00. Not a bad price considering what it does and that it will work on cars well into the future. So if you sell your Chevy and buy a BMW, you won't have to buy another scanner or cartridge. AutoXray also offers other scanners that are OBD-II, OBD-I, Ford, GM and Chrysler specific.

The PC-Link software requires:

  • AutoXray EZ-Link Scanner
  • PC running Microsoft Windows 95/98/00/NT4.0
  • Internet Explorer 4.0 or newer
  • 10MB of hard disk space
  • CD ROM drive
